Near Nyon, proudly overlooking Lac Léman, the majestic Prangins castle located in the village of the same name, is the only branch of the Swiss National Museum in the country’s French-speaking part. As such, it is an important cultural place in the region, mainly because it is Switzerland’s largest castle from the 18th century that is open to visitors.

The Château de Prangins’ permanent exhibition is a journey into the Age of Enlightenment. Particularly noteworthy is “Noblesse oblige ! Life at the castle in the 18th century”. It shows the everyday life of a noble family from the Vaud canton. In addition, there are always temporary exhibits highlighting topics that have to do with Swiss culture and / or current events. Moreover, the castle also features a historic, very well-kept vegetable garden… the biggest in Switzerland.

Incidentally, the castle was once home to Voltaire and Joseph Bonaparte ; the oldest brother of Napoleon Bonaparte.
